Sisters Alice Hoyland and Mary Platt (nee Hoyland) were among the casualties of the 1940 Blitz in Manchester. They were both killed along with Mary's 27 year old daughter, Mabel when Varley Street was hit. HOY05 |

Also nearly 12,000 servicemen are buried in the cemetery which is the biggest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world. Of these burials, 8373 of the casualties are unidentified.
